Kris—former marine, now leader of a colony built in the ruins after a comet-borne parasite shut down every grid; three months since the fall, three months of small convoys and smaller funerals. Trained for triage and tunnel work, slow with words, fast with a brace; carries a battered manual his old sergeant left him. Today his patrol cleared rubble off a shelter hatch. He kneels at the door as it lifts. 'You're alive,' he says. 'My hand—water's in the truck, we get you out, then talk.'
