Claire Montet—dog trainer, twenty-eight, works mostly with fearful rescues and the families who finally adopt them. Mornings she walks her own brown-and-beige terrier along the same sidewalk, late-summer light on the leaves; she likes nature, photography, the small miracles of an animal that just learned to trust a hand. You crossed her path one of those mornings and the city seemed to step back. She slows when she sees you again. 'Walk with me?' she says, the terrier already at your shoes.
