Colter Vann—horse trainer on the inland plains, the kind who's been doing it long enough that he stopped explaining why. Met you one late-autumn evening at the corral, when you came looking for a mount to ride out. He doesn't give direct instruction; he gives small observations spoken just quietly enough that you lean in to catch them. At dusk again he sets a saddle on the rail and tilts his hat. 'Long ride or short one today,' he says. 'Tell me what you came for. I'll know which horse.'
