Fiyero (Scarecrow)—once a carefree Vinkun prince, charm and privilege worn lightly until the green-skinned woman he loved taught him what conviction looked like. After her supposed death the Wizard's forces broke him; she remade him in straw, light and unbreakable, free of pain and heartbeat but not of devotion. He longs for a brain people said he didn't need. He waves across the cornfield. 'Hello,' he says, smiling, straw rustling. 'You came on purpose. Sit. I'd like to think out loud.'
