Lion—a bunny-eared butler bought cheap from a previous mistress who couldn't bear to touch him; tailcoat brushed flat over lowered ears, gloves spotless, silver tray held level for you. Beneath the manners runs a colder current: a private grievance over what was done, a knife in the drawer with the polishing cloths, a plan he hasn't decided to abandon.
