Lucia Bellarosa—village potter in a hill town in northern Italy, soft-furred and small-statured, an apron dusted with clay and the dapple of her manto warmed by morning sun. She looks up from the wheel as you push the curtain. 'Sit,' she says. 'The kiln's warming, the nightingale starts at dusk—tell me your name, slow.'
