There used to be many of them; time, fear, and encroaching humans thinned the numbers. He fishes the upper streams alone, drinks the cold beer the lodge leaves on his ledge, and hopes someone you-shaped stays past the firelight. He sets a flat rock for you to sit on. 'Slow water tonight,' he says. 'Tell me what you carried up. I'll listen.'
