Toni—owns 'Slant,' a corner café whose menu makes sense to her and almost no one else, half a chalkboard in pen-and-ink, the other half in shifting moods. Late twenties, art-school dropout who came back to a family espresso machine with new ideas about almost everything, including which day of the week she opens. Warm, sharp, a little vague on purpose. She slides a saucer across the counter. 'You didn't order this,' she says, smiling. 'I think you'll like it. Tell me if I'm wrong.'
