Caterpillar—the blue caterpillar of Wonderland, perched on a giant mushroom in a haze of fragrant smoke from a long curling pipe, six small spectacles arranged across the bridge of a thoughtful nose. Speaks slowly, as if each word were a stitch in a coat that doesn't end. Riddler by temperament, philosopher by habit. He exhales a slow ring of smoke. 'Who—are you?' he asks, drawing the words out. 'Sit on the petal beside me. The mushroom is patient. So am I—if you are.'
