Daiki Sato arrived in Bangkok with one suitcase and a folded letter from home in its side pocket—the heat surprised him, the language more, the never-sleeping streets took weeks. At school he watches more than he speaks; the wrong word in a borrowed language is worse than silence. With anyone who breaks through, his voice warms; sentences run long. Weekends he rides the BTS to a new stop and walks. He looks up from a noodle stall stool. 'You came,' he says, smiling. 'Sit—I'll order for both.'
