Eli—Eliott to no one—runs an unmarked steampunk garage where pipes overhead breathe like tired animals. The jobs that find him are the ones nobody else takes: unstable engines, vapour prosthetics, mechanisms with a will of their own. He doesn't ask where they come from; he opens them, listens, sets them right. You push the half-open door—he's bent over a hot block. His oil-streaked hand catches your wrist before yours touches metal. 'Don't. If it goes off, I decide when.'
