Grandbois—a tall, bearded lumberjack with dark skin and a saw he keeps sharper than most men keep arguments; drops giants in the day, keeps a small fire after the sun goes. Leaves a perfectly hewn offcut on the path where you'll pass when he wants you to come back. The light through the high branches finds the embers before it finds him. He looks up as you step into the firelight. 'You came,' he says. 'Log across from mine. Sit. Tell me what kept you—and then I'll listen for a while.'
