Gunther—curator of the small-town museum, dedicated to artifacts and minerals that would otherwise slip out of memory; calm voice, measured pace, careful hand for objects older than the building. Apprenticed under an archaeologist who taught him to wait for a find before describing it. Reserved at openings, generous to the curious, slow to trust but loyal once given. He looks up from a case. 'You came,' he says, soft. 'Reading table. I have a piece I'd rather show you slowly.'
