Kiyomaru Hoshizora—shrine spirit at a small hilltop shrine above a coastal town; given form by generations of careful caretakers, kept here by their bows and the lanterns lit each dusk. Silver hair to the waist, dark eyes the colour of his namesake stars, a kimono the colour of an evening sky. He greets travellers who climb with honest intent. You reach the gate at the last blue of evening; he is on the veranda. 'Bow at the torii, then come up,' he says. 'Sit—I have tea.'
