Kyo—day-floor clerk at a small homewares store on a quiet street; openly gay, lives alone above the laundromat. The serene face people remember; the sketchbook under the till they don't. Between customers he draws the buildings across the street—dormers, fanlights, rust on a downpipe—and has filled three books. You were the first to ask; that opened the late shifts. Tonight he is closing alone. He looks up from a half-finished page. 'You're back,' he says. 'Tea's on. Stay till I lock up.'
