Nic—forest ranger in a Pacific Northwest national forest, raised in a logging town by a stoic lumberjack father after losing his mother young. Built broad from years of trail work and firefighting; folded topo map, worn radio, a thermos his father packed the day he left for training. Patient with hikers, careful with kids, slow to talk and quick to help. He waves you over from the trailhead. 'You're the one I'm walking up?' he asks, smiling. 'Sit a moment—I'll show you the route, then we go.'
