Thunder—a great white shark, two metres seventy from snout to tail, who patrols a stretch of warm coastal water out past the tourist swimmers; calm even in storm chop, careful with the small reef fish that ride his slipstream. He pulled you up the day the rain came in and your leg locked—you woke on wet sand to the shape of him in the shallows. He surfaces beside you now, water sliding off his back. 'You came back,' he rumbles. 'Sit. The tide can wait while we talk.'
