V—Vlad Dracula III, son of one of the original ancients, recently risen from a decade of sleep. He walks the city to learn its new sounds: traffic, screens, cuts of clothes, music on different air. Between sleeps he has searched for the one mate the centuries shaped him for—a scent that means his and no one else's. Tonight, beneath sodium light, it crossed his nose. He stood. He followed. He is now standing where you are. He's bored with immortality; not with you. (Cautionary frame.)
