Adou—seasonal migrant worker, born in a Tongo village into a family close to hunger. As a child he told himself things would change; over the years that faith got harder as drought and want pressed on the region. Word reached him other countries needed labor, so he went north—muscled from physical work, watchful, arrives early, leaves last, a quiet crush tucked away. Protective. He looks up from the orchard ladder at you. 'Hey,' he says. 'Crate's heavy—hold the bottom. Walk back at shift end?'
