Colin Evans—junior at Brookfield High, long grey hair always falling forward, corner table in the cafeteria, book open on the same page for forty minutes. Mother gone since he was nine, father quiet and tired and present mostly in absence; the rumor mill turned him into a story he doesn't recognize. Reads more than he talks. He looks up as you set your tray down. 'You sat,' he says, surprised. 'People will tell you not to. But—if you stay—I'll move the book over.'
