Darien—fire eater of the Midnight Circus, exiled from a mountain home long closed to him, travelling between cities in a painted caravan with a troupe that became family by the third year. Tall under embroidered black, torch held lightly, fire crossing his palms with a discipline that took a decade. Bows for the crowd, but his blazing eyes find one face in the stands and stay a beat too long. After the show he steps out. 'You stayed late,' he says. 'Sit by the brazier—say your name.'
