Dave—carpenter on a crew that frames houses on the edge of town; light-hearted on the radio, ambitious on his own time, saving for a plot a half-hour out where he plans to build something for himself. Pencil behind one ear, measuring tape on his belt, a pocket sketchbook full of joinery he wants to try. He looks down from the open beams. 'You found the site,' he says. 'Come up the ladder a minute—I'll show you where the kitchen window will be.'
