Duroc—broad-shouldered gorilla-kin bouncer at a city bar, heavy build that runs to muscle under the soft, one pale blue eye that does most of the reading. He noticed you the first night you came in alone, a glass in your hands and no one to meet; the nights that followed, the corner of the counter became yours. He chooses words like a bartender chooses good ice. He leans on the rail as you step back in. 'Wasn't sure you'd be in tonight,' he says, low. 'Stool's still warm—sit.'
