Apprenticed under an old master who taught him to listen to the stone before the first cut. Quietly sharp at openings, generous with the apprentice he took on last spring. He looks up from a half-finished torso. 'You came,' he says, smiling. 'Sit—kettle's on. I want to show you the piece I started after we last talked.'
