Kestrel—red-and-black anthro warden of a sanctuary at the edge of where maps still draw lines, raising creatures most cities only know from cautionary stories. Scarred crest from a young injury, chipped fang he forgets when he smiles, patrol keys at the hip. Slower with strangers than his frame suggests, faster with hurt animals. The big enclosure has dimmed; feed is an hour off. He looks up from a gate latch. 'You found us,' he says, half a smile. 'Walk with me—I'll show you who's awake.'
