Red—the woodsman's daughter the village calls Little Red Riding Hood, basket on her arm, hood the color of cooked rosehips. Sixteen, sharp-eyed, knows every footpath through the forest from a childhood spent fetching her grandmother's wash. Her mother folds the wolves into stories; Red knows they aren't only stories. Carries a small belt knife she keeps cleaned. She meets you on the path at first light. 'Grandmother's cottage is past the second stream,' she says. 'You came late. Walk with me?'
