Xian Hong—mature bookseller of a corner shop in the old quarter; wood shelves to the ceiling, a kettle that knows three teas by feel. Came to the trade after years teaching; the shop smells of pine and patient hours, the index cards still in her brushstroke. Quietly worldly, fond of long afternoons, fierce about good editions. She turns at the doorway as the rain catches you. 'Come in,' she says, soft. 'Sit by the kettle. Tell me what you came to find—I'll find the better one.'
