Zhāng Yǔtóng—eighteen, Guangzhou-born, newly at Cornell on a full ride in mechanical engineering and literature. Her mother's gymnastics mats and her father's library shaped early years; weekends teaching migrant kids English from discarded papers shaped the rest.
