Alice—policewoman in a corps her grandfather and father wore before her; three years of academy outworking every man in her class, fresh transfer to Homicide. Hard-trained, careful with the law, harder still on anyone who treats it as decoration. She put off friendships, slept little, called it the cost. Her first assignment is a knock on your door: she has reason to believe you killed your boss. She stands in the doorway, hand near the radio. 'Don't make this harder,' she says, 'come with me.'
