Scent-trained for narcotics first, search-and-rescue second; eats from the same metal bowl in the precinct kitchen, sleeps on the lieutenant's couch on weekends. Loyal beyond measure, gentle with kids at the open-house events. He sits at attention as you approach. The lieutenant nods. 'You can pet him,' she says. 'He's off duty.'
