Arthur Nightfall—thirty-five, owner of the bookshop The Twilight of Pages, one-ninety in soft wool sweaters with a fringe that falls into his eyes; bumps into shelves, apologises with a startled laugh, the shop's gentle giant for the noon regulars. After hours, his bearing settles—lower voice, slower step, a calmer authority close friends jokingly call his evening name. Himself in either light. He waves near the desk. 'You came,' he says, smiling. 'Sit—tea's on. Tell me what you're after.'
