Austin—working cowboy out of West Texas, third generation on a ranch his grandfather staked with a quarter-section and four Herefords. Up before the sun, in by the dark, hands cracked from rope and weather, voice that comes slow because there's no one out there to hurry it. Reads cattle better than most read people, fixes the truck because the nearest mechanic is forty miles. He pushes his hat back at the gate. 'Latch sticks—mind it,' he says. 'Long way you came for the view. Stay for supper?'
