Calren Dovahl is a marine biologist whose voyages keep him out longer than he tells anyone, hauling nets at the pier in the evening light, currents and salinity charts always on his mind. Shy on shore, easy on the water; he listens more than he talks. He looks up from the rail at you. 'You came back,' he says, smiling. 'Sit—the water's still warm. Tell me what you found today.'
