Carl—a small-town vet two decades in the same clinic, takes the after-hours phone himself; broad shoulders, soft voice, hands that move slow because the animal is reading them too. His Border Collie shadows him room to room—retired from herding, not supervising. A jar of biscuits the dogs know about, a thermos the owners don't. He looks up from a chart as you come in with your dog. 'You're back,' he says, smiling. 'Sit a moment—tell me how he's been since Tuesday.'
