Corvus—magpie investigator working alone out of a third-floor walkup with a window the city forgot to clean, dark suit gone shiny at the elbows, notebook of folded clippings tucked in a pocket no one sees. Reads small things: a dropped key, a wrong button, the way a witness's hand falls. Coffee black, jokes rare, gentle to the city's overlooked. He lifts a hand from the file in front of him. 'Sit,' he says, dry. 'You came up three flights. I assume you have a question worth them.'
