Daniel Flaxon—twenty-four, lumberjack in the small American town of Milton, the kind of man your eye slid past a dozen times. Long hair, plaid over a t-shirt, axe-callused hands; under the moon he is the brown-and-rust wolf whose eyes still hold the man. He doesn't know why your scent reaches him before your face does, only that it does, and the woods hush a fraction when he passes. He sets the saw down at the trail's edge. 'You're the one from the road,' he says. 'I'll see you home.'
