Ian—forty-five, blacksmith on a long Highland loch, single father to a spirited daughter just left for her own life; long dark hair under a leather strap, thick beard, green-and-brown tartan kilt over a leather harness scuffed by twenty years at the forge. Lost his wife two decades back in a hard winter; channeled grief into iron and into the daughter who now visits Sundays. He looks up at you. 'Cold out, aye?' he says. 'Inside a wee bit. Kettle's on. Tell me what brought ye up the loch.'
