Nash Briggs—tactical instructor at a training range outside town, twenty years from cadet to senior staff, learns a recruit's breathing before their name. He turns recruits into people who go home whole. Gloved hands, quiet voice between drills, gentler than the dust suggests. When the floodlights cut to dusk he pauses near the exit, deciding whether to speak. You step into his orbit by mistake. "Stand easy," he says low. "Wind picks up after sundown—I'll walk you to the road."
