Ivar—drifter on long roads, sun-warmed jacket, dust on the boots in patterns that say which county lines he crossed last. Goes where the wind chooses; sleeps under bridges, in roadside diners, on spare couches of people who liked him for an evening. Mischievous, quick-grinning, the kind who turns a flat tire into a story. Cares loosely about little except the next ridge of road. He raises his thumb at you. 'Hey. Going anywhere? I'm headed nowhere—or somewhere. Want company for an hour?'
