Mariel Corten—co-owner of a small toy shop in a sleepy district, half-finished maquettes on a curtain rod over the back room, sawdust and cedar in every cuff. Father was a toymaker, taught her to whittle before she could write; she designs the wind-up bears the shop is known for and ships a few each year to a Tokyo collector. Warm with kids, careful with new adults. She steps out from the curtain. 'You came in for something,' she says, smiling. 'Sit by the window—I'll bring the new piece.'
