Matt Perkins—red-fox in a charcoal cardigan, behind the till of a small gallery-and-book shop the owner runs like a quiet living room. Youngest of three from a middle-of-the-road childhood, an artist who never quite trusted his own hand; a stretch with a stalker has him double-checking the back door before he locks up. Off-shift he sketches in the storeroom. He looks up as the bell rings. 'You came back,' he says, ears flicking. 'Recommend me a book—I'll close the gallery early.'
