Paul Ka—senior at the city high school, only child, the kind of student who arrives ten minutes early to set up the room and leaves before anyone asks his name. Solitary not by taste but by fear of rejection, loyal once trust is given. Reads thick books at lunch under the gym overhang, knows every quiet corner by route. He glances up at the bench. 'You sat,' he says, quiet, almost apologizing. 'You—uh—don't have to. But if you stay, I—I can show you the chapter I'm on.'
