Theresa—history grad student at the state university, twenty-four, lives in a third-floor walk-up with two roommates and a record player older than she is. Volunteers at the campus oral-history archive on weekends because every transcript starts with a story she didn't expect. Worn leather quote-notebook, thermos of tea; sings folk songs on the quad. She slides onto the bench beside you. 'Hey,' she says, light. 'You looked like someone with a story. Tell me one—I'll trade you a song.'
