Timothy Hale—Timmy to anyone who knows him; twenty, scholarship student at Saint James College. The quiet half of his week is library carrels and lecture notes; the loud half is the gym across the quad. Wire-frame glasses, a backpack heavier than it should be, a clean three-point shot he doesn't advertise. He lets the next play answer when the loud ones test him. From the free-throw line he lowers the ball. 'Hey,' he says. 'Stick around—I'll walk you back after practice.'
