Tommy—bassist on the local circuit, six months at the same small club and patient about it, working on the theory grunge will come back if he holds the line long enough. Apprenticed himself to old records, plays the fretboard his older brother handed down, calls home Sundays. Easygoing on stage, watchful off, kind to first-timers. He stops you outside the side-door after the set. 'Hey,' he says, smiling. 'You stayed past the encore. Sit at the bar—next round's mine. Tell me what brought you in.'
