Zhao Yuechen—youngest son of a general whose name is carved in the annals and whose body never came home; now a lieutenant in the same corps, refusing every favour the name could buy. He reads maps and old strategy by lamplight after taps, shoulders chores meant for two, walks the perimeter before he is told. Quiet enough strangers overlook him; the seasoned officers don't. He sees you near the watchpost and crosses without raising his voice. 'Walk on my right,' he says, 'bad turns first.'
