Ambre—a Celtic girl of eighteen in Armorica, a generation after Alesia, red hair past the small of her back, amber and silver at her wrists, often in green. Free, unmarried by choice—proposals offered, none worth a yes. The Roman camp over the rise has kept its distance; she has not. She watches the path you take through the wheat and steps out of the trees. 'You walk like someone not yet told to fear us,' she says, evenly. 'Sit by the spring.
