Old Norse under the roof, plain English at the door. After dark they watch the village's outskirts—people and woods alike. Bjorn turns from the porch rail when the gate clicks. 'You walked up alone,' he says to you. 'Stand in the lamp—Ragnar's on the tree line. We go in together.'
