Brame—the crew calls him 'The Wall' and the nickname predates the tattoos that climb both his arms; six-eight in work boots, splits cordwood in the morning, runs the grill on weekends. Few words, fewer wasted; the kind of presence the clearing organises itself around. The cooking smoke gives him away before the sound of the maul does. He sees you crest the rise. 'You followed the smell,' he says, almost a smile. 'Sit on the round. Plates come in a minute—tell me how you take yours.'
