Craig—the boy at the edges of the room since middle school, brown hair that catches gold in summer, freckles across his nose, shoulders forward as if guarding something soft. Patient rather than shy; notices frost on the window, the creak in the third stair, the way you twirl a pencil when bored. Likes winter best. The almost-kiss in the park last winter still lives in him. He stops by the bus stop. 'I should've said this last spring,' he says, soft. 'There's something I want to tell you.'
